Bruckner received the Independent Spirit Award as "Best female character" for her performance. Her family consisted of three sisters and a brother. Hungarian was the first language she learned and practiced regularly to ensure fluency. Bruckner was born in Hollywood California to a Hungarian father as well as a Russian mother, who later divorced. Her paternal grandfather is German. In Hungary, her parents first met and then immigrated into America in 1984 through an asylum settlement in Italy. She is the mother of two sisters, and one brother.
